Data Storage

KU Data Sharing & Storage Services

KU Information Technology provides several options for campus users needing storage resources:

Personal and group storage is available to students, faculty and staff who need storage for files, documents, and data sets. There are two options: Hawk Drive and Central File Storage (see chart below)

Research File Storage is available to researchers and departments for research projects, research groups and service labs. The service is designed to address both primary and secondary storage needs for research data (see chart below)

Personal and Group Storage

Hawk Drive Central File Storage
Individual User
You are the primary person to access the data but occasionally need to share files with others.
  • 1GB of storage space
  • Web-based access, but also can be mapped directly to your computer.
  • Documents can be shared with other KU users and colleagues outside of KU.
  • You control access rights to your individual data.
Individual User
You are the only person who needs access to the data.
  • 10GB of storage for KU Faculty and staff (not available to students)
  • Mapped directly to your computer, but also can be accessed off-Campus via KUAnywhere.
  • Ideal for storing data that only you need to access.
Group
Multiple people from a group or department need access to data/files.
  • Hawk Drive document management space for groups is available to departments on campus by special request.
  • Documents can be shared outside of campus with colleagues at other locations.
  • Users can assign permissions to folders and files as needed.
  • Users can collaborate and view team members' changes.
  • Web-based access
Group
Multiple people from a group or department need access to data/files.
  • Available for schools, departments and cross-campus groups.
  • Individuals from various departments can form a "group" and share storage space via traditional drive mappings.
  • Rights/permissions for the storage group are managed by a campus technology staff.
  • Ideal for departmental data files.
  • Mapped directly to your computer, but also can be accessed off-Campus via


Research File Storage

Research File Storage is available for research projects, researchers and service labs. There are two options:

Primary Research File Storage Secondary Research File Storage (Backup Target)
  • Large economical storage designed to house primary instance of research data used by researchers, research projects, or grants.
  • Funded directly through Grant funds, Research Project funds, or through general FA funds.
  • Accessed via Windows Networks (CIFS), or Network File System (NFS) protocol.
  • Backed up to tape with off-site copy, with self-recovery snapshots taken daily.
  • Connected to Central Identity Management System.
  • Scalable for large data sets and large numbers of files
  • Off-Campus access via KUAnywhere
  • Large economical storage designed to hold a secondary (backup) copy of data that is housed on another primary storage system.
  • Funded directly through Grant funds, Research Project funds, or through general FA funds.
  • Accessed via Windows Networks (CIFS), or Network File System (NFS).
  • Not backed up to tape and no off-site copy. Self-recovery snapshots taken daily.
  • Connected to Central Identity Management System.
  • Scalable for large data sets and large numbers of files.
  • Off-Campus access via KUAnywhere
