Frequently Asked Questions about student media
How many installs are students allowed with a single media purchase?
Two installs are allowed per purchase.
Does it matter if I purchase a Windows 8 32-bit upgrade versus a 64-bit upgrade?
Many older computers do not support 64-bit software. To check what your computer supports, go to the Start menu, click on Computer and then System Properties. It will tell you if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit capable. If your computer only supports 32-bit software, the 64-bit Windows 8 upgrade will not work for your computer.
Can the new Office Suite be installed without a previous version of MS Office? Or can it only be installed as an upgrade?
You do not need a prior edition of Office in order to install the new MS Office suite.
What is the end date for this offer?
Media under the Campus Agreement will be available until October 2015.
What previous Operating Systems will work with the Windows 8 upgrade?
Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit), Windows 7 Starter, Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) or Windows XP (32-bit or 64-bit). More information about Windows 8 upgrade paths is available on the Microsoft website.
Please note: Upgrading from Windows XP will act as a clean install and will wipe out all of the data on your computer. Be sure to have all of your files backed up on an external hard drive, or the data will be lost when you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8.
At what point during enrollment can a new student access the software selection site?
New students can take advantage of this benefit as soon as they can log on the software selection web site. Access to the selection web site is based upon a student's enrollment status. Access to the software selection web site may take up to a week after enrollment.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Home Use Program (HUP)
How do I install Office 2010 if I have a previous version of office on my computer?
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you currently have a previous version of Office on your home computer, you must uninstall Office and reboot your computer before installing your new version.
Is the KU Program Code that we use to log into the HUP site unique to each person?
No. One program code is assigned to the University of Kansas for our sole use in accessing this site. You may not share this number with anyone outside our organization.
If we upgrade Office at KU, do home users need to upgrade too?
How are HUP license keys managed?
HUP license keys are separate from the licenses employees use at work. Each key is unique and should not be shared.
Can end users just purchase the backup media without purchasing the download?
Does the HUP benefit provide free upgrades?
No. New versions of Office will be offered through the HUP site when they are available, but end users will need to go through the same process of purchasing the new version. If someone purchases Office today, they can go back to the HUP site and purchase a new version when it is available.
If an end user purchased the download and then needs another download do they need to purchase the software again?
The program allows only one installation with the purchase of the download product. But if an end user purchases the backup DVD they can install the software a second time. The second installation process requires a phone call to the Microsoft support number that comes up on the wizard to receive instructions on reactivating the key.
So, if an end user purchased the download product and later needs to reinstall the same version/key they should be able to re-enter the HUP store to purchase the additional backup DVD. The HUP site offers the following instruction in the Customer Support area:
Q. How do I re-download software, obtain the product key or buy back-up media after I have already purchased?
A. The product key and download link are available in your order confirmation email. If you would like to buy a backup DVD, resend your welcome mail that will allow you to re-enter the store.
Are student GTAs and GRAs eligible for access to Office through HUP?
Why can't I see the HUP announcement message on the Kyou portal?
Eligibility for HUP is determined by employment status. The announcement is restricted to those who are eligible for access to HUP. Currently employed faculty and staff are eligible. Affiliates, students, and retirees are not eligible.
Is the HUP benefit contingent on continued employment at the university?
Yes, upon the end of employment, you should discontinue the use of HUP software.
Is there a time limit to purchase products under the Microsoft Campus Agreement?
Yes, this is a three-year agreement that expires in October 2015.
