Checkout Policies:

Our highest priority is to assist you in completing a successful project.  But in order to maintain a full and active inventory, and the serve the wide needs of the KU community, the following policies have been implemented:

  • Our equipment is provided to KU Faculty, Staff and Students.  You must be a currently enrolled or employed member of the KU community to obtain equipment.
  • Our goal is to provide the KU community with equipment to enhance instructional, departmental, or academic experiences.  For KU students, we want to provide production resources to assist with completing KU coursework, as well as to help you build your personal multimedia skills and literacy.  That encompasses a large number of uses.  Our simple restriction is that we're not funded to provide KU patrons with equipment for commercial or for-profit productions.  Projects with the purpose of creating non-KU-affiliated commercial or broadcast content should find other sources for their equipment loans or rentals.
  • Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.  Walk-in checkouts are also fine, if inventory is available.  Our checkout/return hours are 8am-5pm on weekdays.  Reservations can also be made by phone (864-6452) and email (
  • Most of our items are available for 2-night checkout.  If you check equipment out on Monday, it is due back before 5pm on Wednesday.  Since we're not staffed on the weekends, Thursday or Friday checkouts are due back by 5pm on Monday.  (Check table below for 2-night exceptions)
  • Only one of each item (and its accessories) can be checked out per client.  We don't allow checkout of multiple camcorders to a single client, for instance.
  • You must show your KU ID when picking up equipment.  If you'd like have another student or staff member pick up equipment on your behalf, please let us know beforehand who that person will be.
  • Late Fees:  we do not charge for equipment loans.  Faculty, staff and students can use all of our equipment for no fee.  It is important to us to ensure that future reservations are secured - we need to have your checkout returned on time, so that the next user has it for their project.  With that in mind, we charge $5/day for late orders where the equipment value of the order is under $500.  And $10/day for orders valuing more than $500.  Late fees will be sent to KU's Bursar's office and enrollment holds will be placed until the fees are paid.
  • Lost, Stolen & Damaged Equipment:  we expect equipment to be returned in the same condition it was checked out.  In the event of equipment loss or damage outside of the normal use of the equipment, replacement (or repair) value will be charged to the client.

The Media Production Studio (MPS) is located in the center of the Budig Computer Lab, Room 10, Budig Hall.  The MPS is staffed from 8-5 each weekday, but most of the workstations are available any time the Budig Computer Lab is open.
