Before School Starts

Now that you have completed Orientation and are officially a member of the KU community, review the information below to ensure a smooth technology transition to the university.

Install Microsoft Office 365

As a KU student, you can install Microsoft Office 365 for free on your personal computer and other devices. This package includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and more. You can find instructions on the Device Setup page.

Use Office 365 on the Web

Alternatively, you can use online versions of Office applications without downloading apps onto your computer, as Office 365 is accessible anywhere, anytime, from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection. It is also integrated with OneDrive for Business, a cloud-based storage system offering 1 TB of free, secure, online storage.

Log in to Office 365 with your KU Online ID and password to get started.

Microsoft Office 365 for Mobile Devices

You can download the Microsoft Office mobile app, or individual Office productivity apps (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.), from the Apple Store or Google Play and connect them to your KU Office 365 account.

Watch Tech Tutorial Videos

Although you have completed Orientation, you may still have questions about KU accounts, systems, and technology. Get your questions by watching our tutorial series. Topics include, but are not limited to:  Video player screenshot with "New2KU: Technology for Students as intro banner to video.

Privacy and Security

Update your personal and privacy information such as your preferred address, name, and gender markers through the Registrar's Office website. More information, such as where these changes will appear in various accounts, can be found at the Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity.

KU IT Security Shield logoYou can also decide how much information appears in the KU People Search directory. Log in to the MyIdentity Service to review your privacy settings and make any necessary changes.

Protecting yourself and helping to protect the KU community starts with understanding the basics of IT security. Visit the IT Security website to learn about phishing, passwords, mobile security and more.

Customize Your Email Address

While you cannot change your KU Online ID (e.g., a123b456), you can customize your KU email address by creating an alias. An alias is a alternative for the permanent email address (e.g., a123b456@ku.edu) associated with your email account. After creating an alias, you can use that email address to send and receive messages.

There are few rules for alias email addresses, but we encourage you choose an alias that is appropriate and professional email. For example, a common alias format is firstinitial.lastname@ku.edu.

Nothing Lasts Forever

Your KU email account is used as the official communications channel for information to and from the University of Kansas. However, it isn't a forever email address, so you should use another personal email address for things that will last beyond your time at KU. For example, graduation may seem like a long time off right now, but KU seniors should consider using a personal address for their resume as their job hunt may extend after they leave the university and lose access to their KU email account.

Get to Know Canvas

KU uses the Canvas learning management system. Most instructors use Canvas in their courses to share information with students, post quizzes, manage grading and more. Visit the Canvas site for guides and other information to help you successfully navigate Canvas.

Recommended Technology by School

Your school and advisor may have more information about what to expect for coursework and technology needs.

Additionally, the KU Bookstore Tech Shop coordinates computer recommendations and provides a list by major.
