Set up a guardian account for Enroll and Pay to allow your parent/guardian access to make payments on your behalf.

Personal Computers and Technology

If you already have a computer, it should run at least Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 or Mac OS X, so it can meet basic security, networking, and upgrade requirements. Ideally, it should be supported by the manufacturer throughout your college career.

Some departments or schools may require that your computer have additional features to support work in their programs. Check with your school or department for current information about such requirements or visit the Tech Shop for further information.

Be sure to also check out Software@KU to find out what software is provided and what is recommended.

Purchasing New Technology

Providing general advice or recommendations for student computers is difficult, as needs vary widely, on both school and personal use by the student. The Tech Shop at the KU Bookstores in the Kansas Union has knowledgeable staff who collaborate with campus departments to recommend technology for students’ specific needs at KU and beyond.

The Tech Shop offers Apple, Dell, and HP computer, software, and accessory products, along with academic and KU-custom prices only available at there. The Tech Shop’s certified service and repair department provides quality and affordable service of various brands, including Apple and Dell. For more information, visit kubookstores.com and click on “Tech Shop.”

Free and Discounted Software

Sophos Antivirus software is free for all KU staff, faculty and students. For information on virus identification, removal and to download Sophos, visit security.ku.edu or call 785-864-8080.

Microsoft Office products and Windows Operating System upgrades are available to students for a reduced cost through the KU Microsoft Campus Agreement. Available software includes Microsoft Office 2010 suite, Office 2011 for Mac and an upgrade to the Windows 7 Operating System. This software can be purchased at softwareagreement.ku.edu. For a list of other free or reduced rate software products available to KU students, visit technology.ku.edu/software.
