Students - Printing

Printing and copying services for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors are available in many central campus locations such as computing labs and libraries. These locations have multifunction devices (MFDs) that can do all these tasks on one device. Please click the topic you need to see information about printing and copying services in central locations. If you want to know how to print, copy or scan, go to Student User Documentation. For more information about printing from your personal device, visit Print from Anywhere.

Accessing campus printing and copying

If you have a KU Online ID

You can print from computers in open computing labs and all library locations across the KU campus (see locations). To print, you will need to log in to a computer at one of these locations using your KU Online ID. You will also need to have access to free printing (students only) or sufficient funds in the Beak 'Em Bucks account on your KU Card. KU uses a program called PaperCut to track printing costs. PaperCut is directly tied into the KU Card system and uses your KU Online ID to identify who is printing. More information about PaperCut. When you log into a computer in these open locations, you will see the amount of free printing or Beak 'Em Bucks funds available to you. Be sure to log off the computers when you are done, so that others do not use your account to print.

Printing/copying costs

Printing or copying costs $.08 per page for black and white and $0.48 for color. You can pay with funds you add to your KU Card (Beak 'em Bucks), or by purchasing printing credits ($1.00 minimum). See Visitor printing for instructions for purchasing printing credits.

If you want to use your KU Card, be sure that you have enough money on your card. Log in to to check your printing balance. If you do not have sufficient funds available, you will need to add money to your KU Card.

The KU Libraries (Anschutz and Watson) have special 'Express Printing' stations for walk-up printing. These machines are already authenticated for quick use. When printing from these stations, a window will open asking for your Online ID and Password before the transaction will be processed.

Copying options include both black and white and color copying, with optional duplexing. Copying costs are the same as printing: $0.08 per page for black and white and $0.48 for color. If you have a KU Online ID, you will enter that and your password at the device using the touch screen and keyboard. Campus users will see their available printing/copying balance through the touch screen, immediately after authentication. Visitors who have purchased printing credits will enter the user name and password on the visitor access form they purchased.

Please follow these simple steps for copying:

  1. On the touch screen, press Username. Type your KU Online ID (or visitor access user name) using the attached keyboard, and press Enter.
  2. Press Password. Type your password using the attached keyboard, and press Enter.
  3. Press OK.
  4. The screen will display your current copying/printing balances. Press OK.
  5. The touch screen now has all of the options and functions of a copier. Use the keypad to enter the number of copies, adjust color, size, and magnification.
  6. Once you are finished, press the Access key on the keypad to log off of the device.

Note: The device will automatically log off after 60 seconds of inaction.

Express Printing

Express or Quick Print workstations allow users to print quickly from a USB drive, email attachment or web storage (such as Hawk Drive) without logging in to the computer. Users must provide a KU Online ID and password when prompted, and their KU card must have sufficient funds to print. Usage of the Express Print station is limited to a maximum of five minutes per session. Go to the Printing/copying locations section to see a list of locations that have Express Printing workstations.
