New Features Coming to Blackboard

As part of our efforts to improve Blackboard, KU is introducing four new Blackboard modules: Collaborate Suite, Content Management, Community Engagement and Outcomes Assessment. We expect to launch Collaborate Suite this fall. Look for more information in coming months on when Community Engagement, Content Management and Outcomes Assessment will be implemented.

Each module is being implemented separately, with core project teams assigned to each. These teams include faculty and departmental stakeholders to provide valuable feedback and guidance. Focus groups also will try out the new modules and provide candid feedback and suggestions to further improve the implementation process.

Collaborate Suite

Collaborate is a communication platform that uses desktop conferencing technology to enrich interaction in classes. Example uses:

  • Synchronous and asynchronous learning
  • Classroom collaboration and interaction, including polls, breakout groups, application sharing and whiteboards
  • Virtual office hours
  • Student orientation
  • Tutoring programs

Community Engagement

When implemented, this will allow faculty, students and staff to engage in extended online collaboration and communication across courses, departments and campus groups to build relationships and enhance their academic experience using social-media like features. Example uses:

  • Information can be targeted to specific groups
  • Online communities for students or other groups to create and manage relationships with others who have similar interests

Content Management

This is a set of tools providing a robust file management system for educational materials for both faculty and students in the future. Additional features include personal and academic ePortfolios for showcasing achievements and experiences. Example uses:

  • Sharing materials within and outside the university with ease
  • Gives instructors ability to leverage mobile devices to manipulate files
  • ePortfolio system for students for both protected and public-facing collections

Outcomes Assessment

This will be implemented in the future and will help in collecting evidence of student learning, to answer key questions for strategic planning, program development and gauge student success. Example uses:

  • Course-embedded assessment
  • Allows assessment team to view and report on student learning artifact and performance
  • Enterprise surveys
