Phone & Voice Services

Eligibility:

Faculty
Staff

Description

Most KU faculty and staff use MIcrosoft Teams on their computer to make and receive traditional phone calls via their KU work number. Based on job needs, some faculty or staff may have a desktop phone that is compatible with Microsoft Teams.

Because Microsoft Teams is compatible with laptops, tablets and smartphones, calls can happen anywhere there is internet access. Microsoft Teams phone service eliminates the need for traditional desk phones, and the portability of headsets helps maximize the mobile capabilities.

In addition to making and receiving calls, Teams phone service offers unified messaging via your Outlook mailbox. Voice messages are delivered by email within Outlook.

Emergency Calling and 911

Teams is capable of making calls to 911; however, because these services will not work in the event of a power outage, network outage or IT service outage, you should use your cell phone to make emergency calls while on campus.

Cost

Standard wired headsets are provided at no cost. Units may choose to purchase wireless or other premium audio devices, including traditional desktop phones, for employees.

NOTE: Please work with your departmental IT Support Staff when purchasing audio devices. Not all devices are compatible with Microsoft Teams.

Access

New employees (or their manager) must submit an online request for voice service and a phone number.

Teams phone service is part of Office 365, which is installed on all KU-managed workstations.

KU provides a Teams-enabled headset to all employees for voice and video conferencing. Traditional desktop phones are not typically provided, except by special request.

Support

Support is available through the KU Information Technology Customer Service Center at itcsc@ku.edu or 785-864-8080.

Training and Tutorials

Step-by-step guides and other Microsoft Teams information is available on the How To KU website.
