Wireless Exceptions

There will always be a need for some wired connections, and we will work with unit leaders to ensure the right connection for all devices and equipment. We have established an exception process for requesting a wired connection for devices that need one. The exception process considers a number of criteria (see below), including security, type of device, intended use of device/connection, grant or regulatory requirements, and environmental/building limitations.

Faculty and staff in centrally supported units should work with their IT Support Staff to request an exception for a wired connection. Faculty and staff who are not in a centrally supported unit should contact the KU IT Customer Service Center at 785-864-8080 or itcsc@ku.edu to request an exception for a wired connection.

Wireless Exception Criteria

The following shall be on wired network connections and qualify for an exception to wireless access:

  • Device not able to support PCIe (or Mini PCIe) based Intel Wireless 8260 or 9260, and with no integrated wireless network card supporting 5GHz 802.11 N or higher (Including VoIP handsets, Conference Room devices, Building control systems, time collection devices, etc.)
  • Legacy Digital Signage
  • Point of Sales Terminals and any systems configured to do Credit Card Transactions
  • Network Printers and MFDs
  • IT Security Office Approved Servers
  • Workstations or Instruments that require (or provide) full-time connection to networked database to perform primary task
  • Area designated for IT System Imaging
  • Systems configured to work on Federally Designated Classified Data (If allowed on the network at all)
  • Systems or Instruments primarily tasked to work on data federally designated as Confidential Unclassified Information (CUI) with specific wired network requirements

The following require additional network and/or security considerations before moving to wireless, and may qualify for an exception to wireless access:

  • Systems or Instruments primarily tasked to work on data designated:
  • Research Data with National Security Implications
  • Data subject to protection pursuant to requirements in Non-Disclosure Agreements
  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Personal Health Information (PHI), and Health Insurance/Billing Data (HIPAA)
  • Data that requires logical isolation based on Federal and State requirements
  • Workstations or Instruments primarily tasked to work on data sets sized over 10GB
  • Public Computing Labs, where imaging and maintenance concerns exceed reasonable, reviewable, thresholds

The following are under review for possible move to the wireless network, but no official designation has been made:

  • Newer Digital Signage
  • Legacy Instrumentation
