Overview

Microsoft OneDrive for Business is a cloud-based storage and file sharing service, which provides 1TB of online storage for KU students, faculty and staff. OneDrive for Business is directly integrated with Office 365 for editing and co-authoring documents. Files in your OneDrive for Business can be shared with contacts internal and external to KU.

OneDrive for Business is available within KU's collaboration service myCommunity. OneDrive for Business and myCommunity are accessible anywhere, anytime from any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection.

Limitations:

  • 20,000 item (files and folders) limit
  • 2 GB limit per file
  • Character limits:
    • In SharePoint Online, file names can have up to 256 characters
    • Folder names can have up to 250 characters
    • Folder name and file name combinations can have up to 250 characters
    • Names cannot contain these characters: \ / : * ? " < > | # { } % ~ &
    • Invalid file types: .ashx, .asmx, .json, .soap, .svc, .xamlx

Non-Approved Uses of Personal File Storage via OneDrive for Business

Most data classified as "Level 1 - Confidential Information" by the KU Data Classification & Handling Policy, including information protected by HIPPA (health info), GLB (financials) and PCI (e-commerce), cannot be stored on KU group file storage or personal file storage, including OneDrive for Business. For a complete list of data classified as "Level 1" please see the KU Data Classification & Handling Policy: Appendix 1. Please contact your Technology Support Staff regarding the special permissions and processes required to store Level 1 data.
